Certified Angling Instructor (CAI)

MISSION:

"To teach America's youth long term fly fishing skills within the Boy Scouts of America / Venturing programs.  Primary focus is to qualify Venturing Scouts* to teach the Fishing and Fly Fishing Merit Badges.  Secondary focus is to teach Fishing and Fly Fishing basic skills to other Scouts: Venturing Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Cub Scouts."

GOAL:

Provide a national cadre of qualified youth instructors who would serve as "Certified Angling Instructors" (CAI's).  These CAI's can work as Merit Badge Counselors at Scout Camps and/or to work with troops to teach basic skills allowing those who show interest to progress to earn the Merit Badge.

OBJECTIVES:

1) Establish Venturing Crews with a fly fishing focus.
2)

Encourage High Adventure Crews to learn fly fishing and to prepare for an extended fly fishing experience.

3)

Provide an opportunity for any Venturing Youth to learn to fly fish, to earn the Fishing Elective, in the ranger book, and continue the training to qualify as a CAI for the purpose of teaching others.

4)

Utilize CAI's to aid in fly fishing / fly tying instruction in Powder Horn courses, University of Scouting, National and Regional Jamborees, National OA Conferences, etc.

REQUIREMENTS:

Ages 16 - 21 must be registered as a Boy Scout or Venture Scout

1) Successfully complete the Fishing elective in the Venturing Ranger Book, with knowledge of all 3 options; or have earned the Fishing Merit Badge and the Fly Fishing Merit Badge as a Boy Scout.
2) Candidates who have completed the Ranger/Venture fishing elective must fully understand the Fishing Merit Badge requirements and the Fly Fishing Merit Badge requirements.  The candidate must also be prepared and confident enough to teach each requirement and be able to coach a Scout through all phases of both Merit Badges.
3) Visit the official International Game Fish Association (IGFA) website.  Become familiar with the IGFA's mission and learn the benefits derived from becoming a member of this organization.
4) While visiting the IGFA's website, register online by completing the electronic application to become a Certified Angling Instructor.  Applicants will be required to achieve a passing grade from the online test in order to receive their designation, certificate and official patch. [Online application and test will be coming soon.]

BENEFITS:

  • CAI certification will qualify the Venturer or Scout to teach the Fishing & Fly Fishing Merit Badges at almost all Scout camps.
  • CAI certification will provide opportunities to enhance angler knowledge through association of professional organizations such as IGFA, Federation of Fly Fishers, Trout Unlimited, BASS, or local fishing clubs or tackle shops.
  • The CAI instructor becomes eligible to be sponsored by Bass Pro Shops to teach at national and regional scouting events.
  • CAI certification will help develop skills leading to exciting careers within the fishing industry.
  • Receive official IGFA certification, CAI patch and be recognized in the IGFA's World Record Book.

Note: Adults who wish to obtain certification must become both a registered Fishing and Fly Fishing Merit Badge Counselor with the Boy Scouts of America and also complete requirements 3 & 4 listed above.
