Help the IGFA Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day
On Thursday, April 22nd, 2010, over one billion people in 190 countries will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day. As a federally designated Coastal America Learning Center, the IGFA is partnering with the Coastal America Partnership to facilitate an “Earth Day 4 for 40 Campaign” to celebrate Earth Day. The campaign asks that people who wish to participate do four simple tasks to reduce their ecological footprint on the earth and our oceans and waterways.
One way to reduce your footprint is to properly dispose of chemicals, paints, oils, detergents and plastics instead of dumping through the storm water or sewage system which will pollute the waterways. Another great way to reduce your footprint is to know the origins of the fish you purchase. When buying fish at your local store, ask where and how the fish was caught so you can ensure you are supporting a fishery which uses sustainable practices. Some of the more ocean-friendly fisheries include wild Alaskan salmon, U.S. farmed tilapia and pole and troll-caught mahi mahi.
