Ever dream of striped marlin fishing off the Galapagos Islands, peacock bass fishing on the Amazon, or tigerfishing on the Lower Zambezi ? Author Pat Ford and contributors Chico Fernandez, Andy Mill, Billy Pate, Stu Apte, Rick Murphy and Marty Arostegui share their secrets for planning a fly-fishing trip to remember as they fish some of the world’s best destinations. Saltwater and freshwater species are included, as are Ford’s simply amazing photographs. Even after centuries of observation, fishermen are still trying to solve the mysteries of that magical instant when a trout takes a fly. The Rise, based on recent scientific research into trout feeding behavior and unprecedented photographic studies, provides many new clues. Paul Schullery draws on five centuries of angling lore and wisdom, reconsiders neglected flies, ideas and tactics, and responds to some of the sport’s toughest questions with patience and wit. Fly anglers have long pondered the meaning of fly fishing, catching (and releasing) trout, and life. Fly Fishing and the Meaning of Life, by Wade N. Brooks, is a philosophical and humorous compilation of insights and quips from such sages of the stream as John Gierach, Nick Lyons, Norman MacLean, Patrick McManus, Gene Hill, George LaBranche, and Izaak Walton. The illustrations – historical and contemporary photos and artwork, vintage magazines and ads – are wonderful. Written by nine expert anglers, Island Fly Fisherman is a compact yet comprehensive guide to Vancouver Island fishing. Compiled and edited by Robert H. Jones and Larry E. Stefanyk, it’s filled with useful information on where and when to go and which tackle, tactics and fly patterns will produce the best results. From smallmouth bass lakes and rivers to the beach and open-ocean, you’ll find a wealth of angling knowledge and expert advice in these pages.

There’s no better place to witness the transformation bass fishing has gone through over the past two decades than behind the scenes at the Citgo Bassmaster Classic. In Bass Madness, Ken Schultz brings the spectacle to life with his riveting perspective on the players, spectators, cameras, action, and intense drama. It is a fascinating look at the tournament’s history, legends and lore, and an analysis of the effects the remarkable success and marketing of this iconic event are having on the sport. Lauri Rapala, the enigmatic creator of legendary Rapala fishing lures and founder of what has now become a major multi-national tackle business, would have been 100 years old in 2005. You’ll find fascinating stories and anecdotes; illustrations from personal, company and historical archives; a definitive record of the evolution and development of Rapala lures; leading angler s c ommenting on their favorite Rapalas; and much more. The revised edition of Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes of California, by Samuel M. McGinnis, is the only field guide to all of California ’s 130 freshwater fish species, both native and introduced. Doris Alcorn’s excellent illustrations will enable you to identify fish in the field. Plus there are detailed natural history accounts and angling tips for each species, an expanded cooking section; hints on fish watching, collecting, photography, and aquariums; and fish-printing tips. During the period 1977-79, David A. Taylor documented the boat-building tradition of the small community of Winterton, Trinity Bay, through fieldwork that included interviewing boat builders, observing and photographing boat-building activities, and recording the shapes of boats. The resulting study – Boat Building in Winterton, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland – describes the process from the perspective of the builders themselves. This is a new edition of this classic work.
