Blood Atonement, Jim Tenuto
Crazy for Rivers, Bill Barich
The Lyons Press (contact information above), 2005/2006, 306/80 pp., $14.95/$12.95, softcover.
In 2006, both the softcover edition of Bob Rich’s Fish Fights (originally published in 2001), and his new title The Fishing Club, were entertaining readers. Fish Fights is the engaging story of Rich’s quest to qualify for the Metropolitan South Florida Fishing Tournament Hall of Fame. His goal: take ten species of game fish, on specific types of tackle, with difficult-to-achieve minimum weight requirements. You will surely experience the highs and lows of this formidable challenge right along with him. In The Fishing Club, Rich has gathered compelling fishing stories from notable anglers -- who just happen to be personal friends. It’s a look at the world of fishing through the eyes of some of its most passionate participants, with wonderful insight into what makes people pursue fish. Don Tyson, Bill Dance, John Bailey, Any Mill, Sandy Moret, President George H.W. Bush, and Ted Williams are just some of the fishermen included in this intriguing book. Fifty Years a Hooker describes how Frank Mundus got hooked on shark fishing. According to Mundus, he was the inspiration for Peter Benchley’s shark hunter, Quint, in Jaws. A pioneer of the sport, Mundus spent more than 50 years catching sharks off Montauk Point , Long Island , New York , and the stories he tells here range from dramatic accounts to comic misadventures. The subtitle of The Fishing Companion is Amazing Angling, Curious Catches & Pescetarian Passions. This delightfully eclectic volume is bursting with useful trivia and quirky facts about fishing – and fish – that will amuse and amaze. If you ever wondered how the trout got its name, or where eels go to breed, or have been looking for a good quote (“Fishing is a laborious way of taking it easy” – Franklin P. Jones), you’ve come to the right place. Dahlgren Wallace is a Montana river keeper and fly-fishing guide on an expansive, private river owned by a media mogul. Jim Tenuto’s mystery novel Blood Atonement finds Wallace framed for a murder, then caught in the middle of a nasty war over land and history. It’s a fun read full of action, humor, suspense and great characters. “That autumn, I went a little crazy for rivers.” So begins Bill Barich’s beautifully-written fish story, originally published in 1999 but now available in paperback. He writes about fly fishing; about the pursuit of trout; about family, friends and the natural world as he shares his memories of a season on the water. It’s a charming, little (80 pages) book.

The L.L. Bean Ultimate Book of Fly Fishing
Macauley Lord, Dick Talleur and Dave Whitlock, The Lyons Press (contact information above), 2005 edition, 344 pp., illustrated, $24.95, softcover.
The Beginner’s Guide to Fly Fishing is the perfect “starter kit” for fly fishing novices. Jim Casada provides clear and comprehensive charts that help you choose the most appropriate flies, rods, reels, and lines for your particular prey and favorite waters. Then you’ll learn the best skills and techniques, from the basics -- assembling your rod and attaching the fly -- to casting, reeling, and letting go. Art Scheck’s Fly-Fish Better reveals tips and tricks that will make freshwater fly fishing less frustrating and more fun. Some of the topics covered: selecting the best flies to cast between hatches and in various water and weather conditions; finding the right fly rod; tying loops, leaders and essential knots (including the Bimini Twist); and casting sinking lines and big flies. In Active Nymphing, Rich Osthoff argues that no other form of fly fishing has broader application on so many types of water for both active and inactive trout. With comprehensive advice on rigging and prospecting, practice tips for a wide variety of casts, and strategies for precise control that will bring your nymph to life, this is the guide to becoming a truly versatile angler. In The L.L. Bean Ultimate Book of Fly Fishing, three experts (Dave Whitlock, Macauley Lord and Dick Talleur) cover three essential parts of the sport (fishing, casting and tying). Learn about the assembly of fly tackle; the biology of fish; natural fish foods and how to imitate them; safety techniques; how to become an effective caster; the four-part cast; the roll cast; the basics of fly tying; types of flies; the ten most popular and successful patterns; and more.

Gordon Davies’ very readable Fishing B.C. Rivers will tell you how to reach the most accessible rivers and how to catch the most accessible fish. Each chapter is devoted to a popular river and its tributaries, the fish that inhabit the waters, and suggested flies, lures and baits to catch each species. It will also help you find knowledgeable guides to take you to areas less readily reached. Fishing New Zealand covers over 100 of the best places for catching fish – from kingfish and snapper to blue cod – in New Zealand . Written by TV personality Adam Clancey, it covers techniques, rigs and baits, weather conditions, boating safety, gear, accommodations, types of fishing available at each spot (beach, rock, wharf and/or boat), local tips and tricks, and more. Scotland is a country endowed with water, and much of this water takes the form of lochs. In The Loch Fisher’s Bible, Stan Headley brings the venerable practice of loch-style fishing up to date, replacing “the myth, fable and fairy story with science, technology and understanding.” Predominantly about trout fishing, this unique book also discusses seatrout and salmon.

The Trout and the Fly
Brian Clarke & John Goddard, The Lyons Press (contact information above), 2005 printing, 192 pp., illustrated, $19.95, softcover.
In Reflections of the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, author and river guide Bruce Bischof has put together a visual essay of this central Idaho river. You’ll find narratives of the surrounding landscape, historical and geographical information, fishing techniques and some unique “river cuisine” recipes. But it’s through Bischof’s 75 photos that you’ll discover the real allure of this premier wilderness river. It’s no secret that the Pacific Northwest’s freshwater fish all rely on the stages of the salmon’s life cycle for much of their diet: the eggs, the rotting post-spawn salmon flesh, the new spring fry, and the smolts making their way to the sea. In Cannibal Trout Andrew Williams helps anglers “match the hatch” when these events occur, and successfully tie the patterns and fish the flies. The San Juan River in New Mexico is one of the great rivers of North America . Rich Twarog explores this river -- the landscape, early residents, fish species, effective fly-fishing techniques, productive patterns, equipment, and more. San Juan River is more than a guidebook: insightful conversations with locals and the beautiful photos literally put you on its banks. Washington River Maps & Fishing Guide is the ultimate book for anglers in the state. You’ll learn the secrets of the best rivers, including inside information from guides and experts so you can experience the best fishing Washington has to offer. This 11”x15” book features 37 detailed maps, each packed with roads and river access points, peak fishing times, insect hatches, tackle techniques, knots, services and accommodations, and much more. The Trout and the Fly has been acknowledged as one of the most important books on fly fishing ever to appear. It was published in 1980, the result of years of work by two of Britain ’s most respected angling writers, Brian Clarke and John Goddard. Twenty-five years later, this remarkable classic continues to further our understanding of the world of the trout and the way that the angler, his fly, his tackle, and his behavior appear to the fish underwater.

Fishy’s Favorites for Bass, Trout, and Salt Water, Jay “Fishy” Fullum

Woolly Wisdom: How to Tie and Fish Woolly Worms, Woolly Buggers, and Their Fish-Catching Kin
Gary Soucie, Frank Amato Publications (contact information above), 2005, 232 pp., illustrated, $35, softcover.
Boyd Pfeiffer’s clear approach and detailed photographs have made his fly-tying books unique. In Simple Flies, he designs and selects fly patterns that require no more than three materials for any one fly. This makes them quick and easy. But don’t think they’re ineffective – these flies will catch fish all over the U.S. Patterns include dry flies, wet flies, nymphs, streamers, terrestrials, surface bugs, and even saltwater patterns. Bob Clouser’s approach to fly design begins and ends on the stream, with lots of time in between at the workbench. Clouser’s Flies contains 17 of his most successful patterns for baitfish, subsurface freshwater foods and surface flies, including authoritative instructions for his famous original Deep Minnow. With detailed explanations, full-color photos, and sections devoted to materials and tying techniques. Fishy’s Favorites teaches how to tie a fly and have fun doing so. Starting from the notion that good designs can be easily made from everyday materials, Jay “Fishy” Fullum ties his flies using an array of unusual items, from meat trays and sandwich wrappers to kickboards and fake fingernails. These are very tyer-friendly patterns, with steps and materials kept to a minimum. Includes the story of each fly’s origin and tips on how to fish them. The Woolly Bugger and Woolly Worm are among the most versatile and widely-used flies. They’re easy to tie, require no expensive materials and, most importantly, they catch fish. Gary Soucie’s Woolly Wisdom is an in-depth look at these effective patterns, including fishing with them. Soucie emphasizes experimentation, and the book -- for fresh and saltwater fly fishers -- is fun and informative.

Genetic sciences have produced a “blue revolution” in the way we use aquatic biodiversity. By 2020 the world will be eating more farmed than wild fish, marine bacteria may yield the cure for cancer, and deep-sea bacteria may be used to gobble up oil spills. Blue Genes, by David Greer and Brian Harvey, tackles the issues of ownership and trade in aquatic genetic resources. Included are case studies from four continents and specific policy recommendations. Scott Heston takes a look at nearly 150 years of Ohio ’s fishing tackle industry in Ohio Made Fishing Lures and Tackle. Pflueger, K & K Manufacturing Company, Al Foss, Arbogast, Rinehart, Schumann, Meisselbach and many more companies, large and small, are covered in this comprehensive volume. Includes prices for collectors. Fishing Collectibles is a book devoted to helping collectors identify special items. An excellent reference – with current pricing info -- for rods, reels, creels, licenses and other paper items, bobbers and floats, fish decoys, bait buckets, line spools, nets, tackle boxes, and much more. With 2,000 color photos. Also written by Russell E. Lewis is ModernFishing Lure Collectibles, the fourth in a five-volume series. Dealing primarily with items made in the United States since 1940, the series details the fishing tackle industry and its changes until the closing of most companies in the early 1980s. This volume features all-new information: comprehensive c ompany histories, product details, values and nearly 1,500 photos. A great companion to the first three guides.
