Fish Play

Great for ages 4 - 8!

Structurally, fish are built differently for resource partitioning. That is, fish that have different shapes have different homes. This allows many fish to live in the same environment and still have enough food and shelter to survive.

Fish that have horizontally flat bellies lie and eat on the bottom, call the benthos. Fish that are vertically flat can live in-between crevices and maneuver through these cracks to eat. Fish that are long and round like a snake (called eels), live in holes and often hide until prey swims by.

Do you know???

Where do fish live?
How are fish alike? How are they different?
What are similar structures present in different fish?
Why do you think fish have different shapes?
Does the color of a fish help protect the fish? How?
In what ways are all fish, one way or another, dependent on green plants?
What special features of fish help them succeed in their environment?
