The Mercury / IGFA Junior Angler World Championship (JAWC) is an invitational
fishing tournament. Winners from domestic and international qualifying
events are awarded invitations to fish in this prestigious tournament.
If the 1st place winner can not participate, the second place winner will
be invited. Tournaments submit an application to become a qualifying event
and are approved by a steering committee.
2007 marked the fifth annual Junior Angler World Championship. 37 anglers
participants and their families traveled to Key West, Florida Keys to
enjoy this fun event. Anglers are paired up and an adult accompanies each
angler on the boat. Anglers fish for two days from center console boats
for a variety of fish. Points are awarded based on the species they catch.
A great deal of publicity has been generated because this competition
represents junior winners of tournaments from all over the world that
have competed in a tournament promoted by IGFA. This invitational competition
is a prestigious event for both the qualifying tournaments and anglers
because of its unique nature and IGFA’s global reputation. This
is the second in a series of world class events that include the ROLEX/IGFA
Offshore Championship Tournament, which is held May in Cabo San Lucas,
Mexico and the ROLEX/IGFA Inshore Championship, which is held in July
in the Florida Keys.
This was the final year of the
junior angler championship as the IGFA expands its junior angler program
with more fun and educational fishing clinics and events reaching out
to more youngsters in more areas of the world.
